I like to listen to live music, where tracks often tend to meld together. iTunes has always stuck a gap in between those tracks and it just kills me. Here is a quick solution for getting rid of it. I can't believe I had never thought of doing this.

Thanks for sharing Jeremy. I always wondered about that. I guess I just didn't spend enough time through the preferences.

This trick is just lame. It does not fix the gap. Maybe it helps a bit with listening to live tracks, but for mixes only the "stich together tracks" works. For live-tracks a longer crossfade than zero usually helps a lot. I always keep mine at 6 seconds or so.

Yeah, this really isn't enough for a studio album, the best idea, if your listening to say Abbey Road or dark side of the moon, is just import the album as one track thus actually getting rid of the gap.

Why not just set the crossfade to 1 second..?

I am normally listening to live stuff by Phish, Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule, etc -- concerts taped by fans, and they can split tracks up at odd places, especially when a tease or slice of a song is sandwhiched in between others. For instance, when Gov't Mule plays "Mule" to "I've Been Working" then back to "Mule" in a seemless manner. A 1 second crossfade doesn't really make sense there (much less a 6 second fade).

You can also set tracks to begin/end at a certain time. For some of my live albums I've taken some tracks and set them to end a half-a-second sooner, and the next track I set to begin a half-a-second later. This trick sometimes works when burning a CD or listening on an iPod too!

how do we get this kind of functionality when we listen on our iPods

That is the big thing there. The gap when listening on my iPod is worse than iTunes.
